named at San Diego ship yard
In the tradition that goes back years the christening ceremony of the USNS Hershel Woody Williams was named at San Diego ship yard on October 21st. The contract to build this expeditionary vessel was almost 500 million dollars.
The event was distinct with the sounds of the United States Marine Corps Band. Navy Admirals, Marine Corps Generals and ranks from all parts were present. Spectators watched as the high ranking military officers gave commanding credits to a war hero. As a matter of fact, Herschel Woody Williams received the Medal of Honor in 1945. To point out, being presented by President Harry S.Truman for acts of heroism and bravery. Additionally, these heroic acts took place February 23rd, 1945 during the battle of Iwo Jima.

Wood Williams as he is commonly called by friend and neighbors. He has dedicated a mission of building Gold Star Family Monuments in every State of the Union. At the age of 94 Woody bounced from stem to stern at every event shaking hand and giving well wishes. The smile did not leave his face and he talked to other Medal of Honor Recipients. Notably, Lt. Colonel Charles Kettles and even the youngest of aspiring young men looking to greet the last living survivor of Iwo Jima. Proud to serve then and now, his service is extraordinary. Even more his spirit is enthusiastic.

In fact, the ship built by NASSCO, A General Dynamics Company in San Diego is designated an (ESB4). The fabrication yard is enormous with boulders of steel pieces adorning the grounds. The ship yard has been in operation for some 5 decades. This ship will be a sister ship to the USS Lewis B. Puller. Chesty Puller is the most decorated Marine as recorded in the USMC archives.
