Georgia Property at Auction was once owned by a Revolutionary War Veteran
Georgia Property at Auction was one owned by a revolutionary war veteran and his estate was later disbursed and then re-sold to many buyers through the years. But the story comes from
Mr. John Wright Tomberlin the great great great grandson of Revolutionary War Veteran John Tomberlin and according to his descendants he owned over 58 lots of land throughout Georgia including this parcel Wilcox County Georgia. The 47 acres was willed by Mr. Tomberlin to a former owner after the civil war and then was kept in that family for generations. The subject property that consists of 47 acres and a Lodge/Home is now up for sale once more. Wow this was once part of a huge property. Land lots up until 1821 ranged from 202.5 acres up to 490 acres and in this case Tomberlin could have owned as much as 20-30 thousand acres. Mr. Tomberlin’s family continued the heritage of fighting battles in this cemetery there are also family members that fought in the civil war as well as many graves unmarked and covered over by the sands of time.
Mr. John Wright Tomberlin was doing maintenance on the cemetery as I was taking photos of the property next to the cemetery. He was willing to share the information about his family and at 78 he even pointed out that a special spot was reserved for he and his wife. It was very interesting to learn about this bit of history and what property means families and generations of folks from a time past that helped shape our country. To Many times we are slow to remember that war heroes and veterans gave their lives to advance this country. Just think if war Veterans like John Tomberlin had not have fought to the death we may still be under British rule or worse yet, some other regime worse that that. Now we may be allies with the Brit’s but in the 1700’s they were after world conquest. Property in the United States has been in the division process for hundreds of years and this property division was stated in Georgia by a lottery system that pushed Cherokee Indians out of their native homeland, somehow that did not seem right, however this is a part of the way that the break up of land happened and we are still diving smaller tracts even today as the ownership of smaller parcels takes place.
The next time you are looking to sell the piece opt property you are standing own just take a minute to consider the previous owners and how they came by the precious ownership of their land.
